Parties to go to, people to see, upper arms to conceal...it's that time of year again. Much as I like a healthy dollop of sparkle, when it comes to Christmas, I find it's best to turn it down a notch. To keep it chic. Opt for a simple black dress with a bit of personality: feathers, lace or a sprinkling of sequins, and party like a grown-up.

I was on a phone call last week where a couple of stylists for women over 40 made the comment that "no one makes dresses any more with sleeves."
ReplyDeleteClearly, there are dresses with sleeves and they are gorgeous! Great selections!

ReplyDeleteThe black dress in the third image is AMAZING.
ReplyDeleteI fancy some sparkles so would love that last dress. Xxxx
ReplyDeleteI love the gorgeous chocolate Mint velvet dress, might want to hide the top of our arms (sometimes) but that plunge neckline will oooze confidence ! Great dress review !
ReplyDeleteI love a dressy dress with sleeves too. That first one is so yummy.
ReplyDeleteHave a dinner tomorrow and wondering what to wear. was considering black but not quite sure until I saw your post today which is all black. gorgeous dresses by the way.
ReplyDeleteI do agree about the sleeves. I love all your options, yeahhhhhhhhhhhh

Hi my dear-great picks, I love the lace version and the feathers are fun too! xx
ReplyDeleteThe no-sleeves thing is surely a huge cost-cutting measure, less in terms of yardage than of labour in fitting. A garment with sleeves has to have a better fit than one without, as there are so many important areas of tailoring.
ReplyDeleteThe same goes for the "trend" for sleeveless/strapless wedding dresses. don't even get me started on the sort that lace up the back. Where is the skill in fitting a dress that you tie on yourself?
I have a real bee in my bonnet about this.
Er, what I meant to say was, I love these dresses, especially the third one down.
ReplyDeleteNever mind my outburst!!
I like the idea of long sleeves, as I have long arms and legs, but here is nothing I really like. The closest to my liking, is the second last one, only I don´t like the style of the sleeves on it (;
ReplyDeleteLove them so cool

Some elegant and fun options here, and the sleeves are so appreciated. I've got two or three similar LBDs, all with sleeves, so my goal for the next few years is to try to keep them fresh while wearing and re-wearing . . .
ReplyDeleteBlack. Black. Black. I'm quite tired of black and the endless great press it gets. Sometimes the party scene is more like a funeral! Personally, I prefer to stand out, regardless of what Coco Chanel said about a "little black dress."
ReplyDeletePam - there are some dresses with sleeves available but not as many as there should be & I'm slightly worried that this is just a fad.
ReplyDeletepuncturedbicycle - you're completely right about the cost-cutting - feel free to rant!
Loving the feathers! Fun, flirty, fabulous.
ReplyDeleteRosemary - scroll down for colourful dresses with sleeves.
ReplyDeleteMy wife has two of these party dresses and looks great in them
ReplyDeleteSage advice. Love the lace over nude look. And that's some pretty sophisticated lace, besides.
ReplyDeleteThat last dress really appeals to me, and I know what you mean about sleeves, although I tend to like mine short as it is often warm here in Northern CA.
ReplyDeleteParty outfits should be made of rich fabrics, as they're unique ones. While wish for the suitable Black celebration outfit, pay attention to fabrics: chiffon, silk, satin, lycra, lace are top ones.Best online shopping
