Not the Golden Globes

Today we're going to say congratulations to Colin Firth - well done Colin, I'm pleased this award is going to help you get through the mid-stage of your life - and then take a swift look behind the scenes at That's Not My Age Mansions. Yes, let's talk about me and my globe collection. This is my latest orb, a Christmas present from Mr TNMA (it came carefully wrapped in toilet paper, which was a nice touch). The inscription on the side says Deutsche Eisenbahn Versicherungskasse, so my elementary translation skills tell me it's probably from the German national railway's insurance company - and it looks like a 1930s design to me.

Welcome to my Globe Cabinet...

One day it will be completely filled with globes. I've got my eye on this gorgeous black one from Lassco, beautiful but very expensive.

At Christmas, I made the frightening connection between the family faux-teak cabinet filled with ceramic bird ornaments and general nick-nackery and my own fabulous arrangement. This was accompanied by a general feeling of horror and fear of the possibility that I might actually be turning into my mum. Ah well, guess it had to happen sooner or later.

Do you collect stuff?

  1. I love globes. Not only do they say travel, but their shape is so soft and decorative. I adore your collection and your cabinet! Bravo.

  2. Do we collect stuff? Too much is the answer. At The Women's Room we are passionate collectors. Jane has a fabulous collection of vases. pictures of flowers, clothes (of course) and Amanda collects scales, pestle & morters, glass jars and clothes. I also have a glowing globe. My aunt ran a stationery store for decades and was always giving us globes as birthday presents (old stock I think). My favourite was the globe that lit up.
We were always a bit dismissive of them but now I've seen yours I might nip into the garage and dig ours out again. Ax

  3. What a great collection! And the better for not being too girly. I used to collect tea cups but luckily stopped before it got out of hand. Thank goodness for moving overseas ;)

  4. For a while I collected Poole Pottery jam pots but the ribbing and ribaldry from my family put an end to that silliness. I still love my Twintone cups though.

  5. Oh, I love globes and maps too! I could sit and study them for HOURS. Your collection is wonderful.

My only current collection is roosters, and they're limited to the kitchen. And some antique Canton china pieces, but I don't consider that my own collection as it was inherited whole from my grandmother.

  9. Wowee, I love it when people collect unusual things.
I've never found the one thing that excites me enough to start.

  12. Amanda - if you've got any globes going spare, there's room in my cabinet!

DP - I love maps too. So how many roosters are there in your kitchen?

Vix - they are Sylvac bunnies, I have a small family and a small Sylvac Alsation too (which apparently is quite rare!)

WendyB - ooh looking forward to seeing the ring. Is it a baby globe?

  13. Hi my dear-a very impressive collection indeed, more unique and original than usual pictures, china or porcelain. I suppose my collection is clothes, I'm not a hoarder I just get what I like xx

  14. I love globes too. Your collection and your Thirties are cabinet are fabulous. You're not turning into your mum! I don't class those as nick nacks. The Sylvac bunnies are nice too.

I used to collect old crystal lamps but have given most of them away. I've kept some and have a few big lumps of cut crystal under the stairs in a box that I've always meant to find someone to make into an amazing lamp.

For some reason I get a lot of presents of crystal deco perfume bottles. I have a collection on the windowsill on my stairs.

I also collect clothes as you know! Do books count? I can't stop buying them either xx

  16. What a great collection. I was thinking about getting my son a globe for Christmas, but just didn't know where to start. I didn't want a tacky kids one that looked nasty and fell apart, and didn't want to spend a shed load either - he's 8. Any suggestions on a good place to start?

  17. Oh my dear - you would swoon over the one I (my daughter) found a few years ago! It has a plug in lightbulb in it and it is amazing. I will post a photo of it on my blog so you can see it, but probably in a day or so.

Also, could not help but think of your post about aging as I watched the Golden Globes last night. Did anyone not have filler in cheeks and lips? No one is going to ever ever get old again. We shall all be fembots! Even Helen Mirren seems to have taken the plunge.

Ah well, such is life for the baby boomers!

  19. I love the idea of a globe collection. I have one antique one and it is interesting to me because the boundary lines of countries have changed. Maps in all forms are fascinating things.

  21. I had forgotten you have this collection. It is great and that is a lovely addition Mr TNMA got you. The black one (if you get it)will look good in there too. Xxxx

  24. I collect writing paper. I kid myself it's not an awful thing to collect because I do use it to writte letters on, but it's still amassing quicker than I can get through it.

  25. I don't see an inflatable one in there. Legend Jr has one he is willing to donate.
Before parenthood drained the disposable income, I used to collect Royal Winton Chintz and English Silver, but now Leggo and Thomas the Tank Engine seems to proliferate

  26. Books! We collect books like they're going out of fashion - and now with the Kindle, they are! Do you have the Early Learning Centre globe in there? We have that one?

  27. What are the bunnies doing in the cabinet with the globes?? Planning their next trip perhaps. My daughter loves globes too. We got her a light up one form Stanfords (wonderful shop) last year.

  28. Compliments....but I never get any these days! Please tell me you haven`t got one of those globes that open up into a drinks cabinet type-thingy?

  29. Thank you all for your comments.

Mr Legend - that's very kind of Legend Junior, I don't have an inflatable glove - and there's room in the cabinet.

Nana GoGo - no but I'd quite like one , always think they're a bit James Bond!

Finchley Girl - It's a temporary home. Once the cabinet is full of globes the bunnies will move to the windowsill.
