Should being spotted in Cornwall this summer in the same printed Boden tunic top as every other London mum be a sartorial concern, worry not. The brand's new and exclusive, Limited Edition collection is available from 11 February 2011. This is a premium line with a 'quieter colour palette,' a focus on luxurious fabrics and a panic-in-the-heart-of-Fulham-inducing slogan, 'Once it's gone, it's gone for good.'
The silk tunic top and printed silk dress are both £95, and the knitted sequin jacket below comes in at £250 - and to give you an idea of quantities, there are only 300 sparkly pieces in existence.
Now, some may think that going upmarket is just another attention-grabbing story designed to gain extra press coverage and if they're lucky, appeal to royal-bride-to-be and potential MObama-style, money-spinner, Kate Middleton. But M&S have a Limited Collection and Hobbs have a Limited Edition range, so what's wrong with 'Posh Boden?'
And now for an admission. I like Johnnie Boden. One of my really good friends worked at Boden back in the early days (when there were only five people in the office, including the boss and his wife) and I've always found him to be charming and friendly. He once told me that his style icon is David Niven and his hero is Paul Smith, and frankly say what you will about the overtly middle-class, Boden lifestyle but you can't fault a charming man with discerning taste.
Anyhow, I'm not really a Boden-wearer myself, I have a black jersey maxi dress that I take on holiday every year and I quite like the kid's clothes (on other people's kids, I don't have my own) but that's about it. So, people it's over to you. What do you think of Posh Boden?
I love the print on the tunic. Being American, I don't have the finely tuned sense of Boden's class markers, but from a garment perspective along, this stuff is certainly not offensive in any way:).
ReplyDeleteI love both prints, and although fit would be the test, these both look like eminently wearable pieces -- I find a simple sheath/shift like this dress so versatile and always have an eye out for one.
ReplyDeleteI love that top. Not keen on the macs with different coloured buttons type Boden, that marks you out as belonging to tribe Boden, but the odd piece is good. I used to live in Switzerland where it (was) hard to buy decent clothes, unless they were top end so resorted to mail order. Johnnie Boden's comments in the early catalogues always made me smile.

ReplyDeleteHmm. Dress #2 is quite lovely and I like the muted colors. Like the sweater too, but would not wear such a thing. Not sure about the marketing approach.

I like Boden, although not everything they do. I only tend to buy a couple of things from them each season, their skirts last forever, and I do like their dresses for work. I abandon suits in the summer and always have a couple of their dresses to take their place. I've been wearing one of their velvet coats all winter too

ReplyDeleteHmmm interesting idea by Boden and I expect it will work well. I do own a few items by Boden - the cropped black cashmere cardigan and a VERY ancient (think it was their first catalogue) tartan dressing gown (Men's line) which I still love. But I have never bought anything that is a print or that can be recognised at 50 paces by someone wearing the same thing! Used to dress Daughter in mini Boden when she was at the dressable age! X
ReplyDeleteAgree with you Ellen - I go to the Orla Kiely warehouse sales for exactly the same reason. The Boden tunic is lovely - but I prefer quality of Orla Kiely.

Love the first top -- I love prints but am very cautious with them as many are too overwhelming. But that one looks SO wearable.

ReplyDeleteI have bought items from Boden for work as they are quite good quality,mainly because of time constraints I shop on line.I think you hit the nail on the head,I ALWAYS buy plain things not the patterned stuff which is so instantly recognisable.Especially the spots...
