Within the space of a week, That's Not My Age has been to both a 50th and a 40th birthday party and so let me tell you what I know about grown-up-dressing-up:
1. Wear something you always feel right in
Having a fail-safe item of clothing to turn to is more comforting than knowing you've got a lift home and a lie-in. That's Not My Age prefers low-key, casual glamour to getting dressed up to the nines, as architect, John Pawson says, 'The state of minimum is not one of austerity nor deprivation, it is clarity of space.' Hence, I opted for simplicity, and an Isabel Marant-inspired ensemble, the trousers are old cropped Capri pants from Gap. And yes, I wore this outfit to both parties, if you must know.
2. Allow yourself plenty of time to get ready.
Throwing something on and immediately looking fabulous is inversely proportionate to age. Easy enough when you're a dewy-skinned teenager, less likely when you're closer to retirement than graduation. A last-minute rush is not the best way to start the evening and can lead to sartorial mishaps. Pushed for time, me and Mr That's Not My Age had to stop off for a bag of chips en route to the 50th party, whilst enjoying our grown-up supper the Blog Widower asked if my nail varnish was supposed to have fluffy bits on it.
3. Plan ahead
The sophisticated up-do I had planned to compliment my wannabe French outfit looked more like a powdered wig than an elegant chignon. I can't remember it being such a faff 20 years ago when I last tried it, but I had more patience then and a lot less grey hair. To avoid a last-minute tonsorial crisis and a painful comb-out, either practise the hairstyle before the big night out, leave it to a professional or end up with a fucked-up-do, like me.
And one to avoid:
Staying till the end
One thing you realise after 30 years of partying is that whilst it is considered acceptable to arrive fashionably late, it's never acceptable to stay too late. Make sure you're tucked up in bed when your contemporaries are dancing to The Final Countdown, devouring what's left of the buffet or waiting in vain for the next taxi home.
Inspired by model/designer/rock aristo, Suzie Bick, who I spotted at an after-show party looking frabjous (new favourite word, people) in double velvet and sequins, here are some of my favourite party pieces:

What are your party tips?

Impeccible styling, as always, my dear. That stripy top is just gorgeous and the trousers fit to perfection.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid I'm another case of fucked-up hair, fluffy nail varnish, wonky false-eyelashes and a badly judged dress which the hem invariably falls down with five minutes of leaving the house.

Wonderful and very true. I always feel best in something like a sparkly top, well cut jeans and converse - if I wear killer heels all I can think about all night it getting them off my poor, sore feet.
ReplyDeleteI adore Vivienne Westwood's tailoring. So chic!
It's not a party without false eyelashes for me!
ReplyDeleteI love your outfit! Very chic. I also like everything you've picked. You can't go wrong with a sequin jacket. My tips are always leave long enough to do your hair (not that I always do) so you don't end up with a fluffy, badly blow dried mess. And always take a spare pair of shoes you can walk in xx
ReplyDeleteI agree about having a "go-to" ensemble you feel great wearing. I'm still on the hunt for some great capri pants like those. I've been working on perfecting my Real Eyeliner technique in time for party season.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree about the fall-back outfit. I have one dress that always makes me feel incredibly elegant - which means I can then forget about what I look like and get on with having fun. My hair never needs any time, but I like to spend longer than normal putting on makeup if I'm going to a party (then taking it off again becuase I'm not sure it works ...).
ReplyDeleteI think eat a bag of chips before you go is the top tip and the most stylish. Great outfit and as someone who veers between 'space' and 'performance' I think it is the most slick option for a party. I always go OTT when dressed up like a starlet, something about clothes creating the aura xx
ReplyDeleteI love the outfit! Ankle-skimming trousers are so chic. I love the sequined jacket...sequins look great when worn in a really under-stated way.
ReplyDeleteI try to time it so that my hair doesn't need washing on the day; it never looks good at the just-washed stage. Also, this leaves more time for the smoky eye or whatever you need to spend more time on. Nine times out of ten, I will spend the most time faffing for an age in my dressing gown, then hyperventilating as I attempt to get ready in half an hour.
ReplyDeleteMy other top tip is skip the party and just spend the evening in your dressing gown. I don't go to a lot of parties.
Love that Pawson quote-- clarity of space - great.
ReplyDeleteI like to have a pre-party drink while getting ready. Also, to work out a "let's go" signal with the husband in advance.
Great look. I've ripped out the pic of Kate moss in that Isabel Marant add. It's my favourite look just now.
ReplyDeleteGood advice, being comfortable is soo important.Love your outfit v stylish and understated.
ReplyDeletewhat a great guide and amazing fashion:) Have a wonderful day

ps: I am hosting a really sweet GIVEAWAY, so please join in:) ...I bet you will love it!!!
Your outfit looks lovely and the sequinned jacket is fab too. It's so great to be older and have the confidence to wear what you want to parties and leave when you're ready to and not fret about it. xx

I must say you do this look so well. It always feels effortlessly chic. I on the other had get way too excited and go OTT. Note to self - must get out more ;-) Xxxx
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments.
ReplyDeletepuncturedbicycle - that sounds quite similar to my beauty regime, and I like your top tip - more lounging around in dressing gowns for all!
Genuine Lustre - oh yes, the let's go signal is essential.
WeShop - thankfully there are some advantages of getting older!
I love the things you've chosen - even though I can't get behind kitten heels. Urgh.

Love your shoes! A well cut nipped-in-at-the-waist little jacket always works for me.
ReplyDeleteHi there-love your casual chic outfit my dear and the picks great, especially love the first jacket! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteI need that shoe! Well, two of them preferably! You're right though: wearing something you know you'll feel good in is key. For me that tends to be an LBD from Hobbes which I like to think is very Audrey Hepburn and which I seem to wear to all smart occasions, including the one I'm off to tomorrow night: a reunion dinner, so none of them will have seen it before...
ReplyDeleteJust checked... my comment I left earlier from UK did not 'take' so I was going to say.... takes me longer now to do 'no-makeup make up" than ever to get the same result..!! Love your advice about feeling relaxed and comfortable - love your party clothes! x
ReplyDeleteHey, the same thing happened to me in August! I wore the same dress to both - plenty of colour in red and black with red suede sandals. Most of the women chose monochrome (black)but there were a few out there with colour. In my social world, the older we get the more we seem to wear dresses. Not fancy or formal but flattering and as sleek and modern or fun and off beat as the women who wear them. I love your outfit for cool season parties. Love the shoes!
