Never let it be said that this blogger is sizeist. A recent post on maxi skirts and year-round style drew a couple of comments from petite readers who said they didn't think they could wear a floor-length skirt. Being a thoughtful, inclusive kind of person, That's Not My Age promised an alternative. And, because we're all supposed to be channeling Mad Men right now, I've opted for a fifties-inspired theme.

And here's a final thought on maxi skirts...
Personally, I'm all for women of any height wearing maxi skirts. If the garment is properly proportioned and not too voluminous, then there's no reason why it can't look fabulous .
What do you think?
I completely agree with you. I do love the 50s, so this Autumn looks promising, although I will have to wait until November to wear anything warm in AndalucĂa!!
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree, there's a maxi dress (or skirt) out there for everyone, it's just a question of trying out different styles until you find the perfect one.
ReplyDeleteThe tweed jacket is fabulous. xxx
Love your 'Mad men-esque' post and great to see kitten heels again! So agree that there is a maxi for everyone .... as you say proportion is the key. x
ReplyDeleteI love these 50's inspired fashion, they are most suitable for my curvy shape, thank thank thank you :)
ReplyDeleteAnd as I was one of those petite readers who poo-pooed the maxi for my height, I must confess to owning one, but it is super streamlined and simple and agree that there is a maxi for all, you just need to know which one!
Maxi dress or skirt works on any height. You are right it is about proportions. It is worth trying lots on and you'll find the one that works for you.
ReplyDeleteLove the shoes - LK Bennett have a great range this season.
Lovely combo of looks. I agree with you, I have shot I have photographed quite a few petite women in maxi skirts and dresses and the all looked great. Xxxx
ReplyDeleteRight on !
ReplyDeleteDefinitely agree that maxis are for any height. I'm quite short and love them...and wear flats with them! As long as they're not dragging on the ground or as wide as they are long, then you're onto a winner!
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty small but curvy so the 50's look goes best with my body type. However, it's hard not to feel too formal when wearing a pencil skirt and tucked in blouse for everyday. As long as things are fitted, I think I can pull it off. Even maxi skirts! Though I make sure the top is foldable so I can hike it up!
ReplyDeleteI'm not quite 5'4", and yet I would absolutely wear a maxi -- I had a few that I wore often back in the last incarnation (there were a few wonderful years when we would wear a mini, a midi, and a maxi all in one week -- mid to late 70s??).
ReplyDeleteThis time 'round, my only concern about this particular short woman wearing a maxi is that I bike a kilometre at the beginning of my daily commute, and I don't have a chainguard . . . I'll have to correct that!
Hi there-oh yes, totally agree, its all about the right fit and cut, but there is something for everyone out there, love your mad men inspired choices too x
ReplyDeleteI love, love LOVE the Mad Men influence on fashion - and now I must develop the self confidence to pull such a look off.
ReplyDeleteThose are fab shoes too!

I love, love, love the jacket! I'm 5' 10" in heels and I adore maxi coats with that lovely "hunting jacket" flare but I have never taken to maxi skirts. I just feel wrong in them, so I listen to that. I do have a long tight T-shirt dress that I wear sometimes in hot places and that seems OK but I prefer the look of a short skirt with tights and boots. I guess I'm more 60s than 50s.
ReplyDeleteHmmm. I love that jacket, but I'm not sure I can do the whole pencil skirt and kitten heels thing - just a bad life fit. But I'm emboldened by the idea that maybe I COULD do a maxi ...
ReplyDeleteLove the pencil skirt but maxi dresses just make me think 'Abigail's Party' and I just can't do it - a personal block on that one!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you whole-heartedly! 3 cheers for maxis- I LOVE them, always have, always will. I wear them with flats, and low or high heeled boots (but never with high heeled "court shoes" that seems super naff to me.
ReplyDeleteI think re proportion, it has to be totally long, almost kissing the ground, unless you wear with a boot.
Much much easier and less self-conscious making than the tight 50's style of Madmen- which looks fab on film but relates to my lifestyle about as much as Scarlett's dress for the Wilke's afternoon picnic. Luv it- but I'm never going to wear it :)
Not a fan of maxis - prefer short dresses or trousers. Feel I look weird when you can't see my legs! xx

I'm a little too curvy for pencil skirts, or I used to think so until I saw Joan Holloway on Mad Men...
ReplyDeleteAnd speaking of Mad Men...
I've entered a contest to win a walk-on role on that retro-licious TV show, "Mad Men".
If you wouldn't mind taking a couple of seconds to vote for me, go to my blog, or copy and paste the following link which goes right to my picture:
