Comfy Shoes

Now if that headline doesn't pull in the crowds, I'll sack my podiatrist. That's Not My Age loves a mum shoe and I'm delighted to hear that fashionable young celebrities, like Maggie Gyllenhaal, have taken to wearing orthpaedic footwear. Forget grey hair that's for old folks, it's woo hoo for Worishofers! Going one step further Clarks Originals autumn/winter collection has some fully remastered, 1950s sheepskin-lined granny boots:

Yes. When summer ends and the mum shoes are packed away, That's Not My Age will be going back to my roots. Zipping up my granny boots. In fact, I'm so enamoured, I might even buy both colourways. Because as we all know camel is 'it' this season.

And there's an Igloo shoe too. This cute lace-up comes in camel (of course) and a lovely indigo blue. Which, to coin my favourite phrase, ever, will look good with jeans.

So, how to wear granny boots:

1. Make sure the rest of the outfit is super-sharp. A pair of neatly tailored slim pants, ladylike blouse or masculine jacket juxtapose the footwear's casual nature. Trousers should be slim enough to tuck in or a 7/8 length that ends just above the top of the boot.

2. Hair & make-up should be sleek and sophisticated (if ever there was a case of do as I say, not as I do - this is it!) Looking like you've just escaped from a care home/walked off a Guardian All Ages photo shoot/work from home and don't give a damn is not the image we're after here.

3. Don't be afraid to get you legs out. Granny boots look fab with black opaques. Just add a stunning dress and military jacket to avoid looking like a real-life octagenarian.

Granny boots, how would you wear them?

  1. I have noticed you advocating comfy, mum shoes in your blog before.
Sadly this is something we will never agree on so I make no further comment ;)

  2. I think I will stick with my Uggs! I can't help thinking that these are exactly what my Mum would buy and she is 77!

  3. Those black Clarks' boots are rather sweet but they're not for me. Comfy shoes scare the hell out of me, pre-hip replacement I had no choice but now I'm pain-free I'd rather suffer in massive heels! xxx

  4. Happily! This is music to my ears :)

  5. As much as I love glam heels I also love any kind of flat granny boot and i love Clarks so yep I would!

  6. I think they're rather sweet, especially with a skinny jean. I find myself strangely drawn to them. I love my Uggs as they're so comfortable but they are too wide for my narrow feet and these look a little bit neater. I did a post about Fitflops a week or so ago so I am definitely going down the comfy shoe route xx

  7. I have advice. If you see a pair of Clarks Originals that you like on sale buy them immediately. I saw a pair of gorgeous heeled loafers in June when I was shopping for holiday sandals and pledged to purchase them on return. However when I went looking for them in July I was told the range had been withdrawn from sale. They were not even on the Clarks website. Sob.

  8. Oh no, I don't think I could do this! I've got Minnetonkas and Uggs - that's probably enough! x

  9. Please tell me the future's not Worishofer-shaped.

  10. Oh, I don't think I could do this. I wear Uggs in the house during winter, but I won't even open the front door in them ... There are particular associations in Australia with that kind of footwear - and they're not good ones! Mind you, the pics you've pulled out look great :)

  12. I've worn Worishofers all summer! When my mom saw them she said, "Old ladies wear those in Portugal!" Very pleased, me.

  13. How would I wear them? Without any sense of conviction, I'm afraid! Instead of looking sharp and sophisticated, I'd just look like I was wearing my Granny's boots.

I'm with Mrs Fab - it's the Uggs for me.

Or my black military 'man boots' as Sonshine calls them (he hates 'em) or my nice long red boots. Both high street brands, names escape me :-)

  14. I know that uggs and granny boots are in fashion. But I think "each to her own and whatever suits" should apply. Just bring some style and be yourself for heavens' sake. As a wise friend once said to me as I was complaining about getting older, she said "Margaret, get over it. The fact is " one day you're 40 and it' someone else's turn to be 20". So true. So true. However that doesn't mean you give up style or grace. Just buy comfy shoes with some style.

  15. Mum Shoes are most definitely the future. Add a soft and silky tee and big old cardy and I am there.

  16. I'm all for comfort but those Granny boots are just a step too far for me I'm afraid. They'd make me look like - well - a Granny, no matter how much I revved up the rest of the outfit.

  17. How? What about never ever?
I love almost every single post and item on this blog, but granny boots? Really? It's a joke, right?

  18. I love my Worishofers but those boots just don't do it for me. I am seeking the Worishofer winter look but those are just beyond granny - teetering on frumpy :( Any other things you have found?
