Don't tell Melanie Rickey (or Mr That's Not My Age), but I have a grown-up lady crush on the fabulous Mary Portas, 49. Not only does the queen of shops look fantastic, she has ace taste in music. Her Desert Island Discs, this week, included Marvin Gaye, Radiohead, Maria Callas and Mungo Jerry's In the Summertime - throw in The Clash's White Man in Hammersmith Palais and That's Not My Age would be begging for a civil partnership. Her analysis of Brand Cameron's new poster in The Daily Telegraph was superb. 'Presenting us with this fake, high-gloss image of perfection suggests that the Conservatives have little understanding of what's going on in the real world.' Style- wise, Portas recommends David Cameron takes a trip to Savile Row, 'Obama can pull off the dressed-down look because he's always immaculately turned out, so when he doesn't wear a tie, he's making it clear he's in informal mode. Cameron runs the risk of never looking formal enough to be taken seriously.'
From high street to Downing Street, Portas gets my vote any day.
The queen of shops says finding your own look comes with age. Simple, well-cut clothes and a good hair cut help. What do you like about Mary Portas' style?

Mary Portas is launching a new website in January.

Hear! Hear! And my vote too...Love, love, love Mary P. and thanks for the lowdown about her new website too...
Thought the series she did on overhauling Charity Shops was so good and desperately long overdue.
I admire her style and the fact that she wears heels all day -no 'flatties' for Mary P.
And talking of style, there is an award for you (small though - not general media - just blogosphere) over at mine!!
S-E
Mary P has an extensive collection of big, chunky necklaces. I like that!! Also, having shopped extensivley in charity shops all my life, I loved the series on that subject. Her column in the Telegraph mag was also fab, although tend to read the Times more regularly now.
I love her. She tells it like it is, no messing. As for her style, I think a lot of women in their forties get lost in a fashion wilderness and feel like they don't know what to wear, afraid to look too young but not wanting to look too old. Mary always looks great and I always visualise a Missoni Necklace when I think of her. If only we had her clothing budget!
I was blown away by her Desert Island Discs interview. What a story! And she told it in such a candid way. She gets my vote too.
Love her! Great comment ref Cameron. She is fabulous and hopefully Melanie will be at short film premier at LCF, she might bring Mary!!
In this photo she looks almost as airbrushed as Cameron. However, she gets my vote for choosing Van Morrison's Queen of the Slipstream as one of her Desert Island Discs.
S-E - hey thank you I will be popping across as soon as. Yes, MP's shoe collection is impressive though unfortunately, I have to wear flatties myself.
FG - yes, love the statement necklaces and the fact that MP is reviving charity shops.
Looking fab - yep, she looks fab in her forties and the clothing budget would be nice. Just think of all the Jimmy Choos you could buy!
Ellen - hello and welcome! I didn't know MP's story and was in tears when she described meeting her father's wife years after his death. Very moving.
MDS - woo hoo, I'm there!
Susan - sadly I think you're right about the airbrushing and I did think the comment about Radiohead's Fake Plastic Trees/ fake plastic people in the fashion industry was a bit disingenous.
Ooooh - I love Mary. We have just started getting her show here in Oz. Love your blog - I'm a young lady just hit 40. I'm sure I'll get loads of enjoyment and inspiration from your fine blog!
Cheers, Karen :-)
Mary loved your post. Though on the airbrushing issue - I think the picture in question uses the bleach-it-out-with-a-flash approach. I have always found a flash kinder than airbrush. Speaking as someone who knows Mary very well, her skin is sickeningly fabulous.
Hello Dragonfly/Karen and thanks for commenting on my blog. I know MP has been working on a new BBC series here - general high street stores rather than fashion - which I'm quite excited about. She also has a weekly column in The Daily Telegraph which (I think) you can read online.
TFEAL - OMG Mary read my blog, I think I might faint. And thanks for clearing up the airbrushing situation - pleased to hear that Mary likes to keep it real!
Its me again TNMA - am so excited for you - Mary READ YOUR BLOG.... movin on up....!!Higher and Higher.
Waaaay Haaaay!!!!!!
WAH, I want Mary to read MY blog :( Love her to bits and think she needs her own radio show.
S-E - hello again and can't quite believe Mary read my blog! Too exciting.
RG - yeah a radio show would be fab.
